In the above and below pictures, my Rose Breasted Cockatoo is chewing on a rolled up newspaper toy. It took him about 10 minutes to destroy it completely. If given the chance and unattended bird could destroy part of your home before you can say "Stop!"

You want to provide plenty of different toys in your bird's environment so they can satisfy their chewing urges.

If a bird is not given plenty of toys and things to chew and play with, this may result in feather destruction (plucking, or feather mutilation).

See our "Love My Plucker" page

"I've got a beak and I know how to use it!"

Some people buy toys for their birds and when that bird chews it up, the owners become upset because they don't understand that bird toys are made to be chewed up into saw dust! This is a natural behavior for birds. If you bird chews up and toy, do not take it personally, take it as a compliment that your bird loved the toy you picked out! Make sure you replace the toys quite regularly.

This is one of Dino's favorite toys; a cardboard pop box. He will chew a hole in it the get inside of it and chew his way out of it. He is a silly Too. One of his favorite toys that stopped his plucking behavior is a phone book. He will shred and shred a phone book, until it is a pile of confetti.
